Postmasburg is a town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, located approximately 240 km from Upington and 200 km from Kimberley. It was proclaimed a town on 6 June 1892 and named after the Reverend Dirk Postma, founder of the Reformed Church.

Postmasburg even had its own diamond rush, with the first diamond being discovered in 1918. This led to the growth of an open cast mine in the area. However, the mine was permanently flooded in 1935, creating a unique attraction known as the “Big Hole,” similar to Kimberley. This impressive hole is over 45m deep and filled with fish, drawing many visitors to witness its beauty.

While diamonds are still mined in Postmasburg, the town’s most important mineral is manganese. The recent establishment of the Khumba mine, Kolomela, has contributed to the town’s rapid development. It has become an ideal place for people visiting the surrounding mines or travelers journeying from Gauteng and the Free State to the Western Cape.

In addition to its mining industry, Postmasburg offers a range of attractions for adventure-seekers. The area is home to exciting 4×4 trails, hiking routes, and biking trails, providing ample opportunities for outdoor exploration. Furthermore, nearby game farms offer wildlife encounters, adding to the region’s appeal as a destination.
